SUMMARY:Support Group for Family & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Our support groups are at the heart of the EDF program\, providing safe places for those with eating disorders and their families to grow and to learn from one another. These groups not only have helped many who are touched by eating disorders\, but also have served as a springboard from which lasting\, supportive friendships have grown. Our groups are facilitated by volunteer counselors and master’s level practicum students. You will not be forced to participate during the groups\, but we hope you will feel EDF is a safe place to share your thoughts and feelings. Groups are accessible to all\, regardless of your struggle or diagnosis. This is not group therapy\, but rather a place to get support and build community.\nNew: the EDF Group Member Connection Group on Facebook! This is a group for our support group members to socialize and connect outside of groups. In order to join\, you must be a member of our support groups. Join here.\nYou must be at least 18 years old to attend support groups other than the Adolescent Support Group. Individuals under 18 are encouraged to call us\, or to reach out to us about speaking at their schools. Sign up for our newsletters to get informed about future workshops for adolescents and teens.

SUMMARY:F.E.A.S.T. Panel Discussion: How We Developed FBT\, and Why It Works
DESCRIPTION:About this Webinar:Abstract: In this conversation with parents\, I will start with my own scientific journey that took me to the Maudsley Hospital in London\, back in the 1980’s. Spending about five years in London helped me prepare some of the foundations for the development of Family- based Treatment (FBT) for young people with an eating disorder (ED). The 1980’s in London\, and specifically at the Maudsley\, saw the beginnings of a sea change in the treatment of young people with EDs. Whereas\, up to this point in time\, parents were largely excluded from this treatment process\, in part because psychological theories and treatment models tended to view parents\, at least in part\, to blame for their child’s illness. The work at the Maudsley Hospital challenged these models in a very profound way. That is\, by working with families\, we demonstrated that there is no evidence to suggest that parents are to blame for their child’s illness. In fact\, by including parents in their child’s treatment and leveraging their devotion to their child\, parents are a potent resource\, and their active role in treatment has brought about improved outcomes. As the family engages in FBT\, coaching the parents to bring about weight recovery for the young person and providing their child with emotional support during this process\, are paramount initial steps in this process. Here\, I will elaborate on why FBT works\, and what a ‘typical’ FBT journey(s) might look like. In particular\, I will talk about how parental management of the adolescent’s nutritional intake may at times feel counterintuitive given that these disorders typically onset during adolescence\, which is a time of budding independence for young people. I will conclude with some thoughts on how the parents are instrumental in returning their child to their appropriate adolescent developmental trajectory so that they may go on to become independent and healthy young adults. \nPresenter Bios:\nDaniel LeGrange\, PhD\, holds a Distinguished Professorship at the University of California\, San Francisco\, where he is a Benioff UCSF Professor in Children’s Health and Director of the Eating Disorders Program in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences\, UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences\, as well as the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Le Grange also is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at The University of Chicago\, and was a Berlin Institute of Health Stiftung Charité Visiting Professor at the Charité in Berlin for most of 2022-2023. Dr. Le Grange received his doctoral education at the Institute of Psychiatry and the Maudsley Hospital\, the University of London\, and completed postdoctoral work at the University of London and the Maudsley Hospital\, and a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine\, California. Dr. Le Grange’s research interest focuses primarily on treatment development through randomized controlled trials for adolescents with eating disorders. He has authored or co-authored more than 670 manuscripts\, books\, book chapters\, and abstracts\, and presented his work at more than 200 national and international scientific meetings.

SUMMARY:F.E.A.S.T. Panel Discussion: Promoting Life in the Treatment of Severe and Enduring Eating Disorders
DESCRIPTION:Molly M. Perlman\, MD\, MPH\, CEDS\, FAPA\, is Chief Medical Officer at Monte Nido & Affiliates\, overseeing psychiatric and medical care at over 50 programs across the U.S. She is double board certified in psychiatry and addiction medicine\, graduated from Duke University and the University of Miami\, and has trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. During residency in psychiatry\, Dr. Perlman served as Chief Resident and was awarded the Laughlin Fellowship\, which is bestowed annually on 12 elite residents for outstanding leadership and significant achievements in psychiatry. Dr. Perlman is on the Board of Directors of the Eating Disorders Coalition\, served as Vice President of the Board from 2018 through 2022\, and advocates on Capitol Hill regularly for increasing eating disorder education and access to treatment. Additionally\, she oversees Monte Nido & Affiliates IRB-approved research study on clinical outcomes as Co-Principal Investigator and has co-authored several papers in peer-reviewed research journals on PTSD and eating disorders. \nWe are alarmed that treatment pathways are being created which are robbing people of the chance to recover. We are equally appalled that in some systems\, active treatment is being withdrawn from those with enduring eating disorders\, sending a loud and clear message that there is no place for them in treatment and no hope for their recovery. \nFour of FEAST’s esteemed Advisory Panel experts will lead a discussion on the topic of Promoting Life in the Treatment of Severe and Enduring Eating Disorders\, alongside FEAST’s own Executive Director. \nThe panelists will talk about harm reduction and palliative care that is meant to be used as a vehicle to promote life. They will share their insight and experience on how people with enduring eating disorders can live better lives in the shadow of their illness\, and how their families can help them achieve this. They will address the need to combat the hopelessness associated with severe and enduring eating disorders\, and offer reasons to hold onto hope. \nPlease join F.E.A.S.T. for this sensitive discussion on a complex topic. \nPresenter Bios: \nLauren Muhlheim\, Psy.D.\, FAED\, CEDS is a psychologist\, fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED)\, and certified eating disorder specialist (CEDS) and approved supervisor for the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP). Dr. Muhlheim has held leadership roles inseveral professional organizations including the AED\, IAEDP LA Chapter\, and the Los Angeles County Psychological Association. She provides training on eating disorders to mental health providers internationally. \nAngela Guarda M.D. is the Stephen and Jean Robinson Professor of Eating Disorders and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She has been the Director of the Eating Disorders Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital since 1997. She is an active clinician\, educator and researcher and has published and presented extensively. Her clinical research interests include improving treatment outcomes and rates of meal-based weight restoration for anorexia nervosa and ARFID as well as medical and ethical issues surrounding the treatment of extreme anorexia nervosa. She has received grant funding from both the NIH and the Klarman Family Foundation and her translational research focuses on neural mechanisms of appetite dysregulation that may contribute to the driven nature of eating disorders. Dr. Guarda is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association\, a Fellow of the Academy of Eating Disorders and member of the Eating Disorders Research Society and has been named yearly since 2008 in Castle Connolly’s “America’s Top Doctors” for eating disorders. \nLucene Wisniewski\, PhD\, FAED is a clinician\, trainer\, and researcher whose interests center around using empirically founded treatments to inform clinical practice. Lucene\, an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychological Sciences at Case Western Reserve University\, has taught more than 150 workshops\, lectures and presentations on Cognitive Behavioral and Dialectical Behavior Therapies internationally and has over 40 publications in peer reviewed journals and invited book chapters. She is the founder and Chief Clinical Officer of The Center for Evidence Based Treatment\, which offers therapy\, training and consultation in evidence-based approaches to mental health conditions via traditional and teletherapy platforms. \nWalter H. Kaye\, M.D. is a Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego and Founder and Executive Director of the UCSD Eating Disorder Research and Treatment Program. Dr. Kaye attended Oberlin College\, then Ohio State Medical School\, trained in neurology at the University of Southern California\, and trained in psychiatry at the University of California\, Los Angeles. Dr. Kaye was then a fellow and research physician at the Intramural Program of the National Institute of Mental Health for 7 years where he conducted research on appetite regulation\, behavior\, and treatment for eating disorders. Dr. Kaye was a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh for 20 years until joining UCSD. Dr. Kaye has an international reputation in the field of eating disorders and is the author of more than 400 publications. Dr. Kaye’s current research is focused on exploring the relationship between brain and behavior by integrating approaches from imaging with behavioral and cognitive neuroscience\, and genetics to delineate the neural substrates of eating disorders. A major focus of the UCSD Eating Disorders Program is to use these new insights to develop more effective psychotherapies and medication for Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa. Moreover\, the treatment program is committed to providing evidence-based treatment and collecting neuropsychological and symptom-related data to assess course and outcome. Finally\, the program provides a rich training environment for students and fellows interested in developing expertise in eating disorders. \nJudy Krasna has been involved in the eating disorders space as a parent advocate and an expert by experience for over 15 years. She was an active volunteer in the Academy for Eating Disorders and is a staunch advocate for incorporating lived experience into research and treatment. After serving on the F.E.A.S.T. Board of Directors and taking on multiple volunteer roles within the organization\, Judy stepped into the position of F.E.A.S.T. Executive Director in early 2021.
